And I’m back with another self-portrait photoshoot blog! This time, in the comfort of my own home. I’m not sure exactly what it is yet, but there’s still something about doing self-portraits in public that still make me a little bit uncomfortable. Working on it.
This photoshoot lines up with the mood board of my last post. While I don’t have a clear title beyond “60s/70s Couch”, I really wanted to just have a fun photoshoot without a lot of hassle or stress. Using props I already had at home and wardrobe/styling that was already in my closet just so happened to fit in well with a photoshoot concept I had been working on, so I decided to turn it into reality.
In my basement is a beautiful brown leather couch. While it’s definitely not decades old, the color really just reminded me of the 60s and 70s for some reason, so I decided to style the shoot (loosely) around that time period. My family also has a handful of rotary phones, so I decided to add one of those in as well as an additional prop to add some interaction and more fun into the shoot.
My plan for styling and wardrobe started with the shoes– my ever-so-loved white Amazon go-go boots. One of the best purchases I’ve made, and have definitely gotten my money’s worth out of so far. Because I don’t own any pieces that really scream retro, I decided to settle for creating a similar silhouette with pieces whose patterns seemed a little mod-inspired. I went for a simple A-line look, using a black and white color-block tennis skirt in addition to a cropped, colorfully striped turtleneck with a cute pull zipper detail.
The big challenge of this shoot for me was figuring out styling. I wanted to do something colorful and youthful makeup-wise to match the vibe of the photoshoot, but unfortunately I haven’t yet invested in a great eyeshadow palette for that. I made do with the colorful eyeliners and eyeshadows I do have, just making sure to prime and pack to make the colors pop.
And then we get to the hair. I was really convinced that the hair would make or break entire photoshoot, so I ended up watching several YouTube videos about how to get that perfect 60s bombshell hair style. It still didn’t turn out perfect, but I was pretty satisfied with the final look I created.
After bringing my equipment to the basement and setting up, I was ready to go.
The shoot was definitely fun, but as with almost every self-photoshoot I’ve done, I know it would’ve turned out better if I had been able to act as an actual photographer rather than just use a tripod. I shot for about half an hour, and actually got some pretty promising photos! The base photos I liked most are below, but I’ll share final products on my instagram if the edits go well also.
Let me know what you think of the pictures! Definitely a fun shoot, and I have another photoshoot in the works within a similar time period, so look forward to that if you enjoyed this one. Until next time!
