I went to high school in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. It’s one of the “sections” of D.C., though not the downtown monument area you might think of when you think of D.C. It’s a sweet, almost idyllic section of the city that seems almost more like a town, supported by the “college-town” atmosphere provided by nearby Georgetown University.
I recently reconnected with an old friend of mine and a fellow photographer. We decided to meet up in Georgetown to get lunch and take some photos. (As a note, if you’re around for brunch and willing to spend a little extra, Clyde’s in Georgetown has a great menu and is super COVID-conscious right now.)
Phoebe and I didn’t have any real locations in mind for pictures, so we decided to just walk around and see if anything caught our eye. The first place we stopped to take pictures actually had a lot of “mini locations” in it: there were several different lighting and background choices we could focus on depending on how we set up the photo. I was happy with several of the photos and their compositions, but since the lighting was actually pretty difficult to manipulate in the way we wanted, we then decided to go back on the streets and continue walking and catching up as we looked for other locations.
As we continued walking outside, we came upon a really cute open courtyard surrounded by beautiful brick walls. It overlooked a section of the canal, and had some really cute outdoor seating options, but we decided to do some cute headshots and outfit pictures. The lighting was immensely better, even sans-editing, due to the overcast/cloudy weather that has long been my favorite photographing weather.
Nearby, we found another really cool brink location, that was the entrance of a building. The lighting wasn’t quite as good, but it had some nice brick stairs that we used for a bit of variance in posing as well as a really cool cast-iron gate over the door. I really wanted to continue working with the brick and cast-iron details, not only because it’s so characteristic of Georgetown, but also because Phoebe’s outfit really gave me some cool academia vibes that were completed greatly by the setting.
Throughout the day, I took several pictures as we were actually walking, going for a very streetwear/paparazzi vibe. While not the most technical shots, and many of them ended up pretty blurry, they were very fun to shoot and some still ended up pretty nice in my opinion.
At the end of the day, I got some really fun photos, and had a great time catching up and reminiscing with Phoebe. A few edited pictures from that day are already up on my Instagram, so feel free to check those out! It was awesome to go back to my high school stomping grounds and reconnect with an old friend, so highly recommend.
Until next time!
